Postdoctoral Research Officer 

Starting Salary: £29,704 (on Grade 7) p.a.

Applications are invited for the above post working on the ForeStClim project, which is looking at the effects of climate change on forests and provision of ecosystem services. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and carry out drought and water logging experiments, including measurement of root turnover, soil respiration, soil carbon, gas exchange, and HPLC and GC analysis of soils.

The successful applicant will possess, or near completion of, a PhD in a relevant subject. They will have knowledge of soil biology and preferably have experience of working on experimental ecosystem manipulation projects. Competent field research skills are required, as well as computer literacy and familiarity with use of spreadsheets.  A full driving license and flexibility would be an advantage, as some travel between sites and to project meetings in Europe may be required. The post is available for a fixed-term of 15 months. The position will start on 1 March 2010.

European forest management adaptation to climate change

Spatial planning support system for European interregional scenario development
for forest management adaptation to climate change

to work in a project titled 'Transnational Forestry Management Strategies in Response to Regional Climate Change Impacts' (ForeStClim - http://www.forestclim.eu/). This project is co-funded by the INTERREG IVB North-West Europe programme (http://www.nweurope.eu/) of the European Union. The candidate would be working through ITC's research theme Governance and Integrated Spatial Assessment (GISA), in the department's knowledge field of planning and decision making methods.

Regional variability of climate change and environmental, societal and economic conditions requires adaptation of forest management that is region specific and possibly inter-regionally coordinated. The 21 project partner organizations will show regionalized climate change impacts on forest site characteristics, on forest protection functions, on forest yield, biodiversity, water resources and carbon sequestration across North-West Europe. The development of transnational coordinated forestry management, forest protection and adaptation strategies will be the principal outcome of the project and help secure the future economic stability of forestry in North-West-Europe, a sustainable timber production, an efficient protection of forest ecosystems, as well as the maintenance of the protection, recreation and other functions and services of forests.

Main tasks

  • Elicit narratives of forest management adaptation scenarios
  • Collaborate in forest function modelling
  • Develop methods and tools for quantitative optimal pathway analysis of regional forest management alternatives under different climate scenarios
  • Uncertainty analysis

Project related tasks

  • Develop/maintain contacts and coordinate with several of the 21 ForeStClim project partners in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands as well as other researchers
  • Attend ForeStClim meetings and undertake regular visits to project partners
  • Demonstrate methods and findings in various forms at (international) conferences, workshops, classes
  • Provide support to MSc students working in the ForeStClim project
  • Report on tasks and activities in English

Requirements

The candidate must hold an MSc degree which (partially) covers economic, ecological, environmental, or social aspects of forestry. In addition the candidate should have expertise/skills in several, but not necessarily all, of the following areas:
forest management planning; forest function and services modelling; forestry economics; (dynamic) mathematical programming; German, British, French and EU forestry practice and policies; geographic information systems; scenario analysis; (regional) climate change modelling; and reading of English, French and German, as well as writing and speaking in English.
Finally, the candidate should be able and willing to travel abroad for up to 4 months per year and avail of a driver's license.

Supervision

The PhD candidate will be based jointly at ITC and University of Twente, and will be supervised by Prof.Dr. A. van der Veen and Dr.Ir. L.G.J. Boerboom at ITC and by project leaders in Landesforsten Rheinland-Pfalz (Germany), the Forestry Commission (United Kingdom), the Office National des Forêts - Direction Territoriale Alsace (France). Depending on direction of final research proposal, additional academic supervision will be identified.

Our offer

We offer an inspiring and challenging international and academic environment. The successful candidate will be employed for a period of four years. Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities. Gross monthly salary depends on experience and qualifications, and ranges from € 2042.- to € 2612.- exclusive of allowances in accordance with the job profile Promovendus, under the University System for Job Classification (UJC).
