Announcement of the ForeStClim Mid-term Conference, "European Forestry - Fit for Climate Change?", 21/22 September 2010

The 2-day event is scheduled for 21/22 September 2010, with the Palais des Congrès in Nancy/France as the venue.
It is organised by the ForeStClim management team, with generous support from our project partner Office National des Forêts (O.N.F. Strasbourg) and also École Nationale du Génie Rural des Eaux et des Forêts (AgroParisTech-ENGREF).

Conference Summary

The European INTERREG programme is all about transnationality. And communication beyond borders is only possible if people show an interest in each other, organise themselves, come together, and talk to each other. Even in a globalised World, this will always remain a challenge.

Striving towards the aim of transnationally harmonised forest management strategies in the face of climate change, the ForeStClim project endeavours since 2008 to form a platform for 21 organisations and uncounted individuals all over North West Europe (NWE).

Now that ForeStClim is in an advanced stage of development, we are excited to invite to the project’s mid-term conference. Even though the title is clearly “European”, “European Forestry - Fit for Climate Change ?” is intended as an international conference. Invitations have been sent far beyond the borders of North West Europe (NWE), as climate change is a global issue and will have to be dealt with by all humankind.

The overall focus of the event is to have a results-driven meeting. It will provide the grounds for our ForeStClim partner organisations to show their progress made and milestones reached, but also the chance to discuss open and newly arisen questions with a wider audience. For participants outside the ForeStClim project it also provides a number of benefits:

  • Participating in cutting-edge research in the field of forestry and climate change
  • Presenting in front of a wide range of experts from all of North West Europe
  • Being noticed as a potential partner for future INTERREG or related projects

3 parallel, moderated workshops will be organised on the first afternoon of the conference:

  • Forests and Water
  • Response of Trees to a Changing Climate
  • Forest Management in the Face of Climate Change

Here, all delegates will have the chance to actively participate in the on-going scientific debates, exchange technical know-how, but also discuss possible consequences of the results gained.

Besides transnationality, INTERREG projects like ForeStClim have another major strength: they are at the interface between research on the one hand and practical applications on the other hand. Now that first results are available, the project’s stakeholders will be invited to attend the meeting and share their view and concerns with the delegates.

All in all, this event is seen as a unique chance to bring together people from research, development, forest management and stakeholders, and make them talk to each other.

 

Conference Programme

The structure of the conference programme is depicted in the table below. As the ForeStClim project is in an advanced stage already, the overall focus is to have a results-driven meeting. This does not mean that we intend to overload the event with numerous specialist talks; we rather aim at a balanced approach of presentation-based sessions on the one hand, and workshops in smaller groups on the other hand. There will also be sufficient opportunities to meet and discuss.

Accompanying Programme

    “Icebreaker”
    Prof. Roman-Amat and his colleagues are welcoming early-arriving delegates on the premises of the École Nationale du Génie Rural des Eaux et des Forêts (ENGREF). Please see here for travel directions.
  • 21 September 2010, 19.00-20.00 hours
    “Welcome Reception”
    The Mayor of Nancy, André Rossinot, invites the delegates into Nancy’s Town Hall. Participants will be able to enjoy the brilliant architecture of the building, and – stimulated by drinks and snacks – learn why Nancy can be regarded as the French capital of forestry.

The registration fees include: conference participation, lunch on both days, and coffee breaks. There is no reduction for a 1-day participation.

Discount rates are available for ForeStClim Partners, Students (upon presentation of a valid student card), and Strategic Initiative members. Invited speakers can register for free.

Registration process

In the course of registration, you will be able to indicate your hotel category preferences. Hotel booking will then be automatically handled by the Palais des Congrès.

Lunch is included in the conference fees; to estimate numbers, you will nevertheless be asked to indicate your participation.

Payment is possible by credit card as well as by international bank transfer. Please note that in the latter case you will have to pay bank transfer fees.
French participants can also choose to pay via cheque.

In case you should register after 31 August 2010, you will have to organise hotel bookings by yourself.

 

Submission of presentations and poster abstracts

You are invited to actively participate by giving a talk in one of the sessions envisaged, or by presenting a poster.
Oral presentations will be 15 min + 5 minutes discussion each. If you intend to present, please send an abstract of your contribution (max. 500 words) to us at

The submission deadline is 15 July 2010. Also remember to name the session you prefer to present in.
To facilitate the organisation of the sessions, you will be asked to submit a copy of your presentation a couple of days before the conference.

Any posters to the topic of forests and climate change are welcome. Posters will probably be arranged according to the 4 session topics. The format and size of the poster is not predetermined; however it is important that at least one author of the poster will be available on-site to present it during the guided tour on 20 September, 14.00-15.00 hours.
